Now that summer is here, what better time to discuss hydration! We know we should stay hydrated, but why? What does it do for us? And does our hydration source really matter? We tackle all of this below.
Benefits of hydration
Hydration is absolutely essential to keeping your kids healthy. During the summer months, it can be more challenging and needs to be much more intentional since our kids are regularly outside in the heat running, playing, and sweating. Keeping your kids hydrated keeps their joints, bones, and teeth healthy. It also helps blood circulate and helps kids concentrate and stay focused.
Best sources of hydration
Simply put, WATER. It’s tempting to grab a Gatorade or Vitamin Water, but the added sugar does not help with hydration as much as regular water does. Regularly offer your kids water to ensure they get the most effective hydration. And pay attention to water QUALITY. Not all water is created equal. Even though the US has water quality standards, the water around the country is not all created equal. You can visit www.mytapwater.org to see how your local water rates. We use only filtered water in our office and at home, such as Clearly Filtered. And in order to put the beneficial minerals back into our drinking water after filtration, we add trace minerals and electrolytes.
Signs of dehydration
Even with your best efforts, children can become dehydrated. Here are a few signs to look out for. They will become extremely thirsty, they may be lethargic or less energetic than normal, pale or sunken eyes, cold hands & feet, breathing faster than usual with increased heart rate, irritable, or drowsy. If you notice any of these signs, be sure to offer water immediately. If signs continue or become extreme, contact your medical professional.
